The best European MMA judge Ben Cartlidge was one of five officials scoring the bouts at KSW 29: Reload. The Englishman, who has over hundread scored fights under UFC and Cage Warriors banners documented on MMADecisions.com, even he wasn’t a judge for Narkun vs. Reljic, broke the down the scoring of that protested bout for kswmma.com.
Tomasz Narkun vs Goran Reljic

Round 1: the first round begins evenly on the feet with neithergaining a clear advantage and both landing two clear strikes. Narkun gets the takedown after 21 seconds following a kick from Reljic. Narkun spends 1 minute and 9 seconds in the guard of Reljicand is unable to pass or land any strikes. Reljic constantly defends the attempts to improve position whilst landing short punches from the bottom.

Reljic scrambles back to his feet after 1:30 seconds and Narkun jumps and attacks an arm in guillotine which he attempts to complete for 26 seconds. Narkun releases the guillotineand Reljic completes a short takedown before landing in the guard of his opponent. Reljic spends a further 2 minutes 20 seconds in the guard ofhis opponent landing hammerfists and straight punches while Narkun attempts torespond from the bottom with punches.

Reljic outlands his opponent during this phase and also landsthe more quality strikes from the top position. The two separate as Narkun throws a high guard and Reljicbacks off before the fighters are stood back up. The last 30 seconds are spent onthe feet with both fighters landing an even number of strikes. In this round Goran Reljic landed more strikes and spent significantly more time in a dominant position thanhis opponent whereas, Tomasz Narkun came closest to finishing the fight withthe arm in guillotine.
 
Round 2: Tomasz Narkun completes his first takedown at 30 secondsinto the round and spends the rest of the round in a variety of dominantpositions. He is able to control Reljic up against the fence and also in the closed guard whilst seeking to pass.

He completes a total of 4 takedowns in the entire round andis also able to land the more quality strikes whilst in controlling positions. Reljic completes a takedown after 2 minutes and 34 secondsof the round but is swept by Narkun after just 27 seconds in top position. The fight is stood up after 3 minutes and 31 seconds and the two remain even on the feet until Narkun lands a head kick after 4 minutes andcloses in with a combination of significant punches and kicks.

Narkun completes his final takedown with 20 seconds left in the round and maintains top position. Tomasz Narkun was able to use his effective grappling to dictate the pace of thisround by landing 3 more takedowns than his opponent and working to reach more advantageous positions. Narkun also won the striking in this round after his combination of strikes following landing a head kick.

Round 3: The first minute is spent standing up with both fighterslanding an equal number of strikes. Reljic lands the best shot of this exchange with a body kickbefore the two fighters clinch and Reljic secures and ankle pick takedown after1 minute and 5 seconds and moves to half guard. Reljic then passes to side control after 2 minutes and 55 seconds before passing again to cross side control before briefly attacking with a north south choke.

The two scramble at the 4 minute mark and Narkun lands goodshots from the bottom but Reljic jumps back into his opponent’s guard before the two exchange strikes from this position. Both fighters are stood up with 10 seconds left and trade punches and kicks at an equal rate. Goran Reljic completed the only takedown of the round. Goran Reljic landed the more significant strikes in the round with the body kick initially and the straightleft hand in closing the fight. Goran Reljic spent 3 minutes and 42 seconds ofthe round in top position and passed the guard of Narkun 3 times attaining sidecontrol twice and north south control.

Conclusion

There can be little debate that Goran Reljic won round 3 and equally that Tomasz Narkun won round 2. The fact that all 3 judges scored round 1 differently is testament to how closethis round was. The interpretation of the judging criteria is central to understanding why this round was so close.

H. Strikes thrown fromthe top position of the guard, are generally heavier and more effective thanthose thrown from the back.

1. Thus a Judge shall recognize that effective strikes thrown from the topguard position are of "higher quality", than thrown from the bottom.

The round took place on the feet for approximately 45 seconds and neither fighter was able to show a clear advantage. The rest of the fight took place on the ground where Narkun spent 1:13 on top position and was unable to land strikes and Reljic spent 2:30 on top and landed significantly more strikes.

Narkun came closest to finishing the fight in that round with the arm in guillotine, but this accounted for just 20 seconds of the round. It is central to the integrity of any promotion to have 3 judges seated in different positions to ensure, a different and balanced view ispresented at all times and to prevent collusion. In a round that was clearlythis close, the scores that were delivered are entirely plausible and realisticto expect.
