David can beat Goliath ? interview with Mariusz Pudzianowski
Since all the papers are signed and he will make his MMA debut on the 11th of December, I think it?s about the time to talk to Mariusz Pudzianowski.
What made you decide to test yourself in MMA? Is going to be a single fight?
-I like challenges, that?s why I decided to take this MMA fight. It?s not going to be a one-fight experience. I?ve been interested in martial arts since I was a kid. However, because of personal reasons I took up strength training.
Why MMA, not K-1?
-Because of my weight it would be difficult to compete at the highest level in K-1. I guess I would get a lighter, faster opponent and I would have a slim chance of winning. In MMA you can fight on the ground where my chances are better.
Once you said in the media that you want to fight, your manager has received hundreds of phone calls with various offers. There were no fight organization in Poland, who wouldn?t have wanted you on their roster. You decided to choose KSW Federation. How did Martin Lewandowski and Maciek Kawulski convince you to fighting on their show?
-They offered better terms of partnership, so I agreed to cooperate.
I?m not sure if you remember, but a few years ago Martin Lewandowski tried to sign you for a MMA fight. Why didn?t you agree then?
-I remember these talks perfectly. However, it wasn?t a good time for such a commitment. Now the time is right and I agreed to enter the ring.
When did you hear about MMA first?
-Long time ago. I?ve been to USA many times, where this sport is very popular.
What interests you the most about MMA?
-The mixture of different styles. You can fight standing up, you can grapple. Also, I like the fact that it?s not always the theoretically strongest fighter who wins. David sometimes beats Goliath.
Do you already know whom are you going to train with for the fight at Martial Arts Confrontation?
-There are a lot fighters I want to work with. I haven?t chosen anyone particular yet, so I can?t tell any names.
Which martial arts are going to be your base. Judo, wrestling, muay thai or maybe jiu-jitsu?
-A little bit of wrestling, judo, a little bit of everything.
In which area are you the most comfortable?
-I feel comfortable in street fighting techniques. I go out and do what I have to do.
You have trained Karate Kyokushin for many years, Are there any specific techniques from this martial art you want to use in MMA?
-For sure I will be able to use some. I think leg kicks will be effective. If someone has strong legs and if you?re accurate, leg kicks do damage.
Your opponent Marcin Najamn is a professional boxer, so it?s safe that he will want to fight standing up. Does it mean that you will put emphasis on training wrestling before this bout?
-MMA is sport, where you have to prepared in every aspect of the game. You have to take all these little things and put it all together.
What can you tell us about Marcin Najman. What are his strengths, assets?
-He is a guy, who has boxed a little bit. From what I saw, he wasn?t bad. We have to wait till December to see who is better at a field which is new for me and him. We are both novice in MMA, I think it will be a good test for both of us.
Is there anything you are afraid of before this bout?
-First and foremost the injury. It?s every athlete?s nightmare. I know it, because I experienced it a few times. That?s the thing I?m afraid of.
Let?s look ahead to the future. December 11th, 5 thousands people at Torwar, a few millions watching on TV. Mariusz Pudzianowski, Najman and the referee Tomasz Bronder in the ring. The first bell. How do you think this fight will unfold?
-It?s a heavyweight bout. One punch and you may be out. You can?t really predict how this fight will look like. Both me and Najman we are amateurs in MMA, you can?t predict anything.
Pros and cons of your muscles in a fight?
-I don?t know the pros or the cons. It?s hard to judge myself. We will see in the fight.
The duration of the fights in KSW is two five minutes rounds and possible 3-minute overtime. Will you be ready for a 10-minute battle?
-I can?t answer this question at the moment. I?ll do everything to prepare myself for the fight.
How much are you going to weigh the day of the fight?
-At the moment I?m around 145 kilograms. I plan to drop about 15 kg to gain more cardio and some flexibility.
Are you sure about that?
-I know my body well and I?m sure my speed and explosiveness will be good then.
Is everything alright with your operated hand? I?m concerned because your last performance at Strongman event showed that you?re not 100% healthy.
-Everything is not the way as it should be, but my hand is slowly getting better. Injury and operation was 5 months ago, but I have competed for the last one and a half months. It?s not that bad.
You saw Martial Arts Confrontation live a few times in the past. You know that every fighter has his own entrance music. What will be yours?
-I don?t have anything set yet, probably my brother will choose something for me.
Last Sunday one of the strongmen made his boxing debut. December will be yours. Is fighting a new trend among strongmen?
-I have no idea. I don?t follow what other strongmen do. I mind my own business.
Mariusz, thanks for your time. If you have anything to say to your fans all over the world, now it?s time for you.
-I will do my best. When I do something seriously I always do it really well, whether it?s strongman competition or MMA.
Once again thanks for the interview
-Best regards
