We encourage you to read the very interesting interview with the best MMA fighter in Poland Mamed Khalidov. First KSW champion talks about his upcoming bout at KSW15, potential rubber match with Jorge Santiago and his new clothing line, which will hit the stores soon.
Hello Mamed. It’s been a long time since we last spoke. How are you? Has anything changed in your life?
- Nothing’s changed. I still train in Olsztyn. I had some minor injuries, but everything is fine at the moment. I’ve got a new partner TCM Extreme. I joined my brother Kerim Abzailow, Marcin and a few other MMA fighters and judo players. We do our conditioning trainings with them and they are also one of my sponsors. They basically sponsor me and help me with my preparations.
Your new clothing line will hit the stores soon. Tell us about it.
- It’s a line of male underwear. We’ve just started the manufacturing and we’ll soon enter the market. What is the line’s name?
- Mamed Khalidov Fighting Spirit, but it will be later shortened to MK, cause it’s too long. For now we’ll use the full name so everybody recognizes it.
Let’s get back to MMA. When are we going to see Mamed Khalidov back in the ring? At KSW 15 or maybe sooner?
- I know that my managers are in talks with Sengoku about fighting at their December’s show. They talk about an opponent for me. I really hope this works out.
Sengoku announced a few fighters for their upcoming show, Nakamura and Misaki in particular. Is it possible that you’ll face one of them?
- Nakamura and Misaki are confirmed, but there are a few other middleweights signed with the promotion. I think I may be offered a Japanese opponent, though. Nakamura or Misaki that’s what my gut tells me. You’ve mentioned two Japanese fighters, what about Murilo Ninja Rua (Editor’s note: KSW owners negotiate his participation in the KSW shows also)? The Brazilian has just signed with Sengoku to fight at their shows.
- I thought about it and honestly I really like this fight. He’s a great fighter and beating him will be a great step forward in my career. Misaki and Nakamura are both world class fighters, however they lost their last fights. If I lose against them, it will be a tough step backwards. Still as I fighter I want to face all of them.
What about a rubber match with Santiago? You are now tied with him. Would like to decide who’s the best?
- If the third fight happened I would need to knock him out, because the possibility of winning on points is slim. I’m used to the fact that the judges don’t see my superiority in the fights that go to distance. That’s why I would need to get a finish.
You’ll be in one of the KSW 15 featured fights in March, probably against Ryuta Sakurai. Do really want that rematch? Wouldn’t you like to face a higher caliber opponent?
- Personally I’d like a more established name. However, the draw against Sakurai affected my rankings abroad and I want to prove that I’m a better fighter.
After the Sakurai fight many people suggested that you need to go and train abroad. Recently it has become a pretty popular thing among Polish MMA fighters. For instance Karol Bedorf trained in Golden Glory, Artur Sowinski in London Shootfighters. Do you also have similar plans?
- It’s a good move for you career. Working with the same people all the time is not always good. Visiting new gyms and sparring with new partners could be beneficial.
So do you plan to do it?
- After my fight in Japan I want to go to Gdansk, because there are many K- 1 fighters, who train and fight in Holland. Then I’ll visit Kolobrzeg to train my wrestling and at the end I’ll go to Top Team Szczecin as they have amazing grapplers.
