"I want to win this tournament" – interview with Artur Sowinski

We encourage you to reading this interesting interview with Silesian Cage Club Katowice fighter Artur Sowinski. The popular Kornik talks about his beginnings in MMA, future plans and preparations for KSW 14 in London Shootfigherts.

Hi Artur. When did you have your first contact with sporting activity?
- When I was a child my father used to take me to Czarni Bytom judo classes, but because of my lack of any special motivation I didn’t train for too long. I later took up soccer and tennis, but it was rather a form of staying in shape. Nothing serious, just a short episode.
So when did you hear about MMA first?
- It was 2004 or 2005, when I came across Mirko CroCop Filipovic’s fights on youtube. I was really impressed by the spectacle Pride organization was and I started to fell in love with the sport.
So how did you become an MMA fighter?
- Well, I started thinking about it just after I discovered the sport. At the beginning I was like: “It would be cool to enter the ring accompanied with a chosen song on such a big event”. Later I begin to be more serious about it.
You train in Silesian Cage Club Katowice under coach Tomasz Bronder. Is he your only trainer?
- 95 % of my training is under Tomasz Bronder. I sometimes have boxing classes with Andrzej Butowicz or some local wrestlers or judokas show me some of their tricks. Still the whole training process is supervised by coach Bronder.
So what are your biggest assets as a fighter?
- I don’t know, probably the whole group of people that supports and cheers for me.
Your biggest flaw as a fighter?
- I sometimes forget that nothing is impossible.
Have you ever thought about your life without MMA?
- I’d probably spend my Friday nights drinking beer (laughing).
Do you have someone whose advice you try to follow in your life?
- My parents.
Let’s get back to Mixed Martial Arts. You had your toughest MMA fight to date a few weeks ago. You battled one of the best European lightweights Niko Puhakka at Fight Festival in Finland. What can you say about this fight?
- Not much, I lost three-round decision. He was better, that’s it.
What have you learnt from that loss?
- Each fight brings you new experiences and each loss teaches you more than a victory. I lost and I feel bad about it, but you have to learn from it and continue to train. I know what I did wrong and why I did it. I hope that I’ll be able to show what I’ve learnt from it.
In September you will participate in the KSW lightweight tournament. It’s probably an even bigger challenge that your fight Finland, would you agree?
- Yes I will fight in KSW in September, I’m really happy about it. I will take part in the eight-man tournament. So far only two fighters has been announced, so you can’t really tell anything about my potential opponents. That’s why for now I’d rather not compare it to my last fight.
Have you already started preparations for the tournament?
- After my bout against Niko I took some time off for my body to recover. This break was perfect for me and I feel that my head is back in its place. I had more time to deal with some of my non-MMA affairs. Now I can smoothly enter the preparation cycle.
What will your preparations look like?
- As a student I’m really glad that my camp will be during the holidays. I will be able to fully commit myself to training even a few times a day.
Is it true that you plan on visiting London Shootfighters during your training camp?
- Yes, on July 19th I’m going to London with my coach Tomasz Bronder. London Shootfighters are one of the two best gyms in England and training there will really help my preparations for KSW 14. I will certainly learn some new training methods, spar with pros and gain new experiences. It has to affect my performance at KSW 14.
You are a young talented prospect. Do you think that regardless of the outcome fighting for KSW will open new doors in your professional career?
- KSW is by far the best MMA organization in Poland and I’m glad I will fight for them, but it’s not my ultimate goal. It’s not the “Mount Everest” of my MMA dreams. Don’t get me wrong, I’m honored that Martin Lewandowski and Maciej Kawulski gave me this opportunity and I’m really thankful for that, but I have bigger goals ahead of me. In few years I don’t want to look back and remember that I participated in KSW shows, I want to remember winning them. I know how it sounds and I expect that many people reading this interview don’t give me much chance in this tournament. However, I’m confident that with help of my team I’ll be able to prove that nothing is impossible.
Artur thanks for the interview. Do you want to thank anybody or greet your fans?
- First and foremost I’d like to thank “Panda” company for their support. Thanks to them I’m able to professionally prepare for the September’s event. I’m cordially grateful for that. I want to also thank my coach Tomasz Bronder and all my training partners at Silesian Cage Club, my family, friends and all the people who help me, motivate me or cheer for me. Than you all, cheers!
