"I wanted to be a priest" – interview with Jan Blachowicz
We prepared a special extensive interview with Jan Blachowicz for all KSW fans. It will be divided in three separate pieces, where Cieszyn born fighter talks about his childhood, his private life and his MMA career. We start with his early days in Cieszyn. Hello Janek. At the beginning tell us about your childhood. How do you remember it? - It was fun, definitely.
What was the funniest experience? - In kindergarten, with couple of friends we decided to run away to Honolulu (laughs). One day when we were outside it started to rain. Our sitters called all the children to go back to the building. However we had this hole in the fence prepared and instead of coming back we ran away.
Did you make it to Honolulu?
- Not exactly. We were thirsty so we went to my grandparents’ house to get something to drink. Unfortunately my grandfather realized that something is not right because at this time of day we were supposed to be in kindergarten. We managed to run away and hide in hen house. Back then it was pretty common in cities to keep poultry by your house. I remember that the whole city was looking for us... (laughs).
So is it safe to say that Jan Blachowicz wasn’t the nicest kid in the world?
- Pretty much. I was causing troubles very often?
What about your school days?
- I was an exemplary student throughout the first three grades.
And then what happened?
- Something went wrong I guess.
How bad was that?
- Really bad. To this day I believe there are more interesting things than studying. Obviously you can’t completely neglect school, but the truth is later you use maybe twenty percent of this knowledge in real life.
What was you favorite subject?
- Till fourth grade I liked them all (laughs).
And then?
- I liked P.E. only.
I assume you competed in sports during your schooldays?
- I didn’t compete in sports at school. I used to train judo and that’s where I participated in various competitions. I didn’t like football or basketball.
Every boy has childhood dreams of becoming a superman or a policeman. What was yours?
- I wanted to be a priest.
A priest?
- Yeah, I had this weird time when I wanted to be a priest. Later it changed and I wanted to become a stuntman.
You have a younger brother. Tell us about the relationship with him.
- He won’t forgive me this, but I had beaten him up for the first time before I learnt how to walk (laughs). You know how it is. We fought each other a lot, but we stuck together.
How important are your parents in your life?
- Very important. They support me, I wouldn’t be here if not for them.
I see you got emotional when talking about your parents.
- I lost myself in thoughts.
You owe them a lot, right?
- Everything! I don’t think I will ever be able to pay them back.
