"I will handle him in stand-up and on the ground" – interview with Piotr Strus
On December 1st Piotr Strus will make his KSW debut against Krzysztof Kułak. What are his thoughts before this middleweight clash? Who will be in his corner? The interview below will answer these and many other questions concerning the talented Nastula Fight Club fighter. Enjoy!
Every time we talked to each other you told me that you wanted to fight for KSW. Now you are finally here, fighting at KSW 21 on December 1st against Krzysztof Kułak. Are you happy?
- Of course. I’m happy with the contract I signed as well as my first opponent in KSW.
Please tell us when the KSW promoters contacted your managers. How did the talks go and for how many fights is your deal signed?
- You ask a lot of question my friend (laughs). The negotiations went pretty swiftly. Actually, it took only two weeks from the first call to the contract signing. As for the details of the deal, it’s confidential so I can’t tell you anything about these terms.
Does signing with the biggest European promotion have any special meaning for you?
- Personally, I take it as a chance for further progress in my MMA career.
In your debut you are set to face the former KSW middleweight champion Krzysztof Kułak. What do you think of him?
- He’s a good, experienced fighter. It should be a rough fight.
Is there any area where you want this bout to take place?
- Not really, I will handle him both standing-up or on the ground
Who do you bet on in the Kułak versus Strus showdown? Do you think Krzysztof can surprise you with anything?
- It’s one of these great questions. Of course I’m confident in my skills. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t take this challenge. Can he surprise me with anything…? I just need to be careful and respect my opponent.
Your last outing showed that your grappling still needs a lot of work. Have you made any progress in this area since then?
- Obviously everyone learns from mistakes and the loss helps this process greatly. I train all the time, even harder not to make this mistake ever again.
Have you dealt with this loss already?
- I didn’t have anything to deal with. It happened. I got careless, he put me in a great technique and I was done. I learnt from it and that’s most important. Anyone who knows anything about fighting realizes that only those who don’t fight never lose.
You train in Nastula Fight Club along with Jan Błachowicz and Paweł Nastula. What can you tell us about the preparations for the December’s bout. Will you train just in Warsaw or do you plan to visit other gyms?
- Uuu my training plan is long and complex, but entirely focused on my opponent. I will obviously spend most of the preparations with my friends from the gym, but not only in Warsaw, as we have a special camp in Zakopane. I will also visit few other gyms.
Who will be in your corner?
- Robert Jocz, Jan Błachowicz, Wojtek Orłowski and Andrzej Pniewski.
Piotr you started your MMA career only two years ago. Please tell us how did you take up mixed martial arts? How do you recall your beginnings in this sport?
- At first I was fighting in amateur and professional kickboxing under tutelage of Andrei Molchanou in Warsaw’s Physical Education University. Unfortunately the gym was closed and most of us had to find another place to train. That’s how I found myself in Paweł Nastula’s gym and I slowly started to train with guys there. After a few months Paweł offered me my first professional fight. The victory gave me motivation to train even harder and I started to be more and more involved in MMA.
Not many people know that besides being a fighter, your also a web programmer. I’m pretty curious why you need mixed martial arts then, when you have such a profitable occupation. Is it for adrenaline or is it a hobby?
- For now MMA is my whole life. The rest is just my lifestyle.
To end the interview I’d like to ask you about your entrance song. So far you have been always accompanied by Hemp Gru. Will it be the case at KSW 21?
- Of course! JLB!
Thanks for the interview. Now it’s time for you to thank anyone who supports you.
- Thanks. I’d like to thank all my sparing partners in Nastula Club for their help in my preparations as well as Igor Kołacin. I’d like to thank my sponsors: Manto, Diil Gang, Hi Tec Nutrition, Besuto Sushi and many others. Also special thanks to my parents for their support and my girlfriend Marta, who deals with my moods at home. Greetings to my managers Piotr and Jacek and many others who helped me in any way to get where I am now.
