"It’s a unique feeling for a Polish citizen" - interview with Mamed Khalidov
Yesterday Mamed Khalidov flew out to Japan and today, as promised, we present you with the interview with the top middleweight in the world:
Hello Mamed. At first I’d like to ask you how it feels to officially represent Poland in your fight abroad?
- (laughs) how does it feel? It’s a unique feeling for a Polish citizen!
Tell us about your preparations for this bout.
- I trained for two and a half months. At the beginning of the training camp I had a few injuries but I managed to work through them. I learnt that I’d face Sasaki only two weeks ago. It’s always better to know the name of your opponent earlier, but that’s how things sometimes work...
Sengoku Soul of Fight is a huge combat sports event in Japan. It will be one of the greatest martial arts festivals in Asia. Twenty-eight fights under various rules, a few thousand fans in attendance and a lot of more in front of the TV sets. Do you feel any additional pressure competing on such a big show?
- For sure, it’s a cool event for Japanese fans. Does it put any additional pressure on me? I don’t think so. A fight is a fight. I’m ready to battle my opponent and I’m focused on that.
What do you know about Sasaki?
- I understand he’s a good and experience fighter. His record is not perfect, he’s got pretty even number of wins and losses. He fought a lot of named opponents. His dangerous as anyone in this sport, if you make a mistake, he’ll capitalize on it. I’m prepared for a well-earned win after a tough battle.
Your fans want to see another highlight reel knockout from you, but it won’t be that easy. Sasaki rarely losses via stoppage and is very durable, don’t you think?
- I’ve watched his fights and indeed he’s very durable. However, going to the scorecards is not an option.
Everybody is eager to see your spinning back kicks back. We’ve missed them in your last fight. - In my last fight in Japan you didn’t see the real Khalidov. I fought in a slow-motion mode, I just couldn’t find my normal rhythm. I believe that I can show a lot of more than in the second Santiago fight. Sometimes you just have a bad day, it happens... As for the techniques, we’ll see in the fight. I didn’t use my trademark kicks in that fight because I wasn’t relaxed enough.
Your fight takes place on December 30th. The New Year’s Eve is the next day. Do you have any whishes for 2011?
- Just health!
Mamed thanks for your time and good luck.
- Thank you.
