Jurkowski and Zawada promise an old school fight
It has been over 11 years since KSW 6. That night Martin Zawada (27-14-1) walked away with a unanimous decision win over the first KSW star Lukasz ’Juras’ Jurkowski (16-10) in what was gruelling fight.
Two years prior in 2004 Jurkowski won the very first KSW tournament defeating three other men in one night in Warsaw, Poland. It was the launch of KSW and the launch of his career. He subsequently reached the finals at the following two events. His fighting style and personaility drew fans in and he became the first KSW posterboy.
Zawada, without one promotion to call ’home’, was making similar progress during that time too. He was 12-1 in various promotions around Germany and Europe before facing Jurkowski. His reputation was that of a well-rounded slugger with the ability to put you away at any moment, as he did with the majority of his opponents.
Both men fought a war of attrition at KSW 6. And afterwards both men continued on their paths. Zawada would go on to fight a number of times more in KSW and over the years became one of the true respected gatekeepers in European MMA. Jurkowski would mix in fights in KSW with adventures around the world before retiring in 2011. However this was not the end of his story.
In May last year KSW 39 took place at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland - the home of Lukasz Jurkowski. The event was big enough to lure the legend out of retirement. 57,766 people cheered on as the 36-year-old beat MMA veteran Sokoudjou by a decision.
Fights for someone like Jurkowski must make sense. Fighting someone like Sokoudjou in his hometown at the second largest MMA event of all-time made sense and now facing Martin Zawada makes sense, he gets a chance at revenge with an old rival.
Both men are promising an old school fight in this one.
"I may lose the first round 10-7 but i will still be able to score a knockout in the second round. I am not here to play it safe and win by decision." - Martin Zawada.
"I will withstand everything. It has been a long time since our first encounter. I’m looking forward to settling the score with [Zawada], with pleasure." - Lukasz Jurkowski.
KSW 42 takes place March 3 from the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland and it is live around the world on www.KSWTV.com.
