"The fights weren’t easy to judge” – interview with Tomasz Bronder
We present you with the interview with Tomasz Bronder – chief judge at KSW 13. He answers questions about judges’ and referees’ work during the last show in Katowice.
Hi Tomasz. I appreciate you taking your time to talk about judges’ and referees’ performance at KSW 13.
- Hi, no problem.
At the beginning please rate the quality of judging and refereeing throughout the whole show.
- I think it was good. We invited Slawek Szamota and Piotr Baginski to our team of officials and they were mixed up with our regular judges. We try to improve our work every show, we talk about mistakes in order to learn from them. There weren’t many at KSW 13, even though the fights weren’t easy to score.
You’ve mentioned mistakes which occurred. Could you be more specific.
- I didn’t react when Pudzianowski was holding the ropes in the corner. Robert Kostecki hesitated when he was stopping the Skibski vs Vegh bout, which resulted in an awkward situation when fighters didn’t know whether the fight was over.
Many people believe that Vegh vs Skibski fight was stopped too soon. What’s you opinion on that?
- I haven’t been able to watch all the fights yet and unfortunately it is one of them. From my judge seat I thought it was a justified stoppage. The referee had the best view to halt the bout.
During the event we saw a few yellow cards. Among others Vitor Nobrega received one. Please explain why he was penalized and what KSW rules say in that matter.
- Nobrega received a verbal warning first and the yellow card next for head butts on the ground. They weren’t hard shots, but still illegal. If he had fouled once again, he would have received a red card which is equivalent to one point deduction on judges’ scorecards. Yet another foul would have resulted in disqualification.
Many fans and viewers of Mamed Khalidov vs Ryuta Sakurai bout believe that after three rounds KSW Team fighter should have won the decision, while the extra round should have gone to the Japanese fighter. What’s your take on that? How did you score each round?
- The fight was really tough to score, especially from my position as a referee of that bout. The first round was really close and I would have to watch it a few times to score it properly. The time will come for the detailed assessment of judging in this fight, I have to watch it carefully on TV. The bout was really close with submission attempts, takedowns and hard punches from both sides, that’s why it’s really hard to tell who was better that night.
To end the interview I’d like to ask about cornermen behaviour in the Pudzianowski’s fight? Did you see that? Why didn’t you react?
- Actually I did react. One cornerman received a warning for hitting the ring and lying on it. After that I saw someone discipling Mariusz’s cornermen and they acted properly since then.
