Will Irish Eyes Smile at KSW Dublin
We are days away from the inaugural KSW event in the Emerald Isle. KSW 40 takes over the 3Arena in the heart of Dublin in Ireland on October 22nd and there will be a number of top Irish fighters looking to make an impact on the card.
In the co-main event ’Stormin’ Norman Parke (23-6-1) of Bushmills, County Antrim will once again square off against KSW lightweight champ Mateusz Gamrot (13-0). The pair faced each other at KSW 39 this past May in what turned out to be a heated fight filled with controversy and bad tempers. In classic Parke fashion, the UFC veteran built up the fight with some choice words and the rivalry started. When they met in the cage there was an incident in the second round where it appeared Gamrot bite down on Parke’s finger and chaos in the cage ensued.
After a short break in the action the referee restarted the contest with both men visibly angry. Parke seemed to push the action and intensity more for the remainder of the fight but inevitably lost a close decision a the judges’ scorecards. A result which caused a stir on social media around the world. The bosses at KSW saw this reaction and due to the incident in the second round they decided that this story could not end there and they booked the rematch for Dublin.
Things have not died down between Parke and Gamrot. On a recent media day in Dublin the duo had to be separated by the large number of security there as they nearly collided during the face-off. This is a treat for Irish fans getting to see this fight go down and a proper bad-blooded showdown for KSW fans around the world to enjoy live on KSWTV.com.
A true pioneer of Irish MMA in Chris Fields (11-7-1) will make his KSW debut in his home city on October 22nd. The SBG product has been competing professionally for almost ten years and spearheaded the first wave of Irish fighters to make a splash internationally. In 2012 he won the Cage Warriors middleweight title and the year after he appeared on The Ultimate Fighter.
Now a new challenge faces the 34-year-old. He will enter the KSW arena for the first time and will take on the dangerous Michal Fijalka (16-6-1) who returned to KSW last year after 8 years away from the promotion. In 2008 he won three fights in one night to win one of the early KSW tournaments. Of his 16 wins, he secured 13 by way of stoppage over some of Europe’s top light heavyweights and he will be looking to make that number 14 with a TKO or submission win over Fields.
Joining Fields and Parke on the card will also be UFC veteran Paul ’Redser’ Redmond (12-6). Hailing from the famous Team Ryano gym in North Dublin, Redmond has long been one of the top fighters in Ireland. An impressive 7-1 run in Cage Warriors saw him signed to the UFC in 2015. After a pair of fights there he then signed to fight in the BAMMA promotion where he defeated tricky veterans Chris Stringer and Rob Sinclair and where he lost a narrow decision to KSW 40 co-main event fighter Norman Parke.
Over the years Redmond has developed a very solid striking game but it is his grappling his opponents much watch out for as if he grabs a hold of your leg then he will be taking it home with him. This will make for an interesting contest as the only time Łukasz Chlewicki has been submitted was back in 2005 to renowned grappler Demian Maia. The 37-year-old has been fighting for over 13 years and has faced the likes of Paul Daley, Artur Sowinski, Azi Thomas and Mateusz Gamrot over the years.
Finally, kicking off the KSW 40 card will be a local match that will appeal to both Irish and Polish MMA fans as north Dublin’s Paul Lawrence (3-1) takes on Polish-born Dublin-based welterweight Konrad Iwanowski (5-1).
Lawrence established himself as a leading amateur fighter in Ireland before turning pro in 2015 where he stopped the vastly more experienced Viktoras Kontrimas in his debut and the 32-year-old is known for his KO power. But looking to get past this KO danger is Konrad Iwanowski, a fighter who sees this opportunity in KSW as a dream come true. Both men have shown some pre-fight confidence saying that they will get their hand raised in this contest. A stellar fight to kick off this card.
